Scouts Enjoy International Adventure

posted 13 Jun 2011, 14:31 by Stephen Harrison
White water, terrifying heights and a view you wouldn’t believe were highlights of the week as 85 Scouts from the Washington and Houghton area enjoyed the Ultimate Alpine Adventure in Morrillon, French Alps/

The annual Houghton-Le-Spring District trip aims to bring the Groups which make up the district together and challenges young people to work together to overcome their fears, to support each other, and most importantly, to have a great time.

Challenging Activities

The 8 days abroad were certainly action packed and this year’s trip included many highlights. We stayed the night in a mountain refuge and our tough climb to the hut saw us take in some fantastic Alpine views, girls and boys supporting each other all the way.  For many Scouts, via Ferrata was the biggest challenge as they completed a hairy traverse across a huge set of cliffs, clinging on for dear life.

White water rafting was exciting as teams of Scouts paddled furiously down the rapids avoiding the rocks. Fourteen-year-old Alex said, “We went down a very steep waterfall with some extreme rapids and then we came to the best bit, the 40 foot high ravine which was just wide enough to fit the rafts through. It was a brilliant rush of adrenaline as we rode the white water.”

Making New Friends

The week for most of our Scouts was a journey of self discovery as Scouts learned how they contribute to the Group, how they can support and inspire others and how they can meet their potential. Before the trip many Scouts had never met each other, but everyone left as friends.

Successful Organisation

The weeklong adventure wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a small army of adult volunteers who brought unrivalled enthusiasm and commitment to the event. The thorough planning ensured the success of the week. To find out how you can join our growing adult team, please visit. www.hls-scouts.org.uk/volunteer.
