Q) Where do you meet?
A) There are groups located across Houghton-Le-Spring district, you can find your nearest group on our map. Please note all membership enquiries are managed through www.hls-scouts.org.uk/join.

Q) My child is joining a group in HLS and I would like to offer my support, how do I go about it?
A) Please visit our volunteering page to see how parents can support our group.

Q) Do you have a waiting list?
A) Unfortunately we do have a waiting list across beavers, cubs and scouts. When you submit your details to HLS Scouts, our membership management system will give you details of how you can track your position on the waiting list,

Q) When will I be invested?
A) Most beavers, cubs and scouts are invested about a month after first joining, usually at a parents night at the end of our programme cycle so that parents can come and see the investiture and take embarrassing photos.

Q) Where can I buy  a uniform?
A) You can purchase uniforms at Scout Shops Online or at Durham Scout County’s Scout shop. Details of opening times and location can be found on their website. If you have any problems, please talk to your section leader.

Q) When should I buy uniform?
A) Once you have been coming to scouts for a few weeks and you know that you are going to continue you should buy a uniform.

Q) How much does it cost?
A) Each group charges subscription fees for members, this is usually between £10 and £15 per month. This covers most troop night activities and badges. Scouts have in the past taken part in ice skating, swimming and climbing as part of their weekly programme. We also fundraise regularly to subsidise the costs of our programme. Most groups ask that subs payments are made by standing order.

Q) Are you able to gift aid subscriptions?
A) Yes, we can claim gift aid 20% gift aid on subscriptions from tax payers which also goes towards the costs of activities for young people.

Q) How much do weekend activities or camps cost?
A) Camping and other activities are charged at cost. For example a weekend sleepover with beavers or cubs could cost £25, a week of summer camp for scouts will cost approximately £180, or our 8 day Alpine Adventure costs £425. For all events, we support young people to fundraise and for those in the most need, have support available. 

Q) Are all adults DBS checked?
A) All adults who work regularly with young people are DBS checked, this includes all adult leaders, group executive members and occasional helpers including those who offer help with transport to activities.
