How to register
To start your award, you need to register for it. Registration is in a few easy steps. We'll confirm where you are at each step of the way. Below are the steps to register your award. Anything highlighted, is communication to you to confirm where you are in the process.
How to register for your award
  1. Complete the online registration form to provisionally register for the award. Click here for the form.
    • You, your parent/carer and your section leader will receive an email confirmation of your provisional enrolment from the district DofE team.
  2. Send your payment for your award to your section leader.
    • Your section leader will confirm when they have received this.
  3. You will receive a welcome pack and you will be allocated a DofE mentor.
    • The district DofE team will email you, your section leader and your parent/carer with the name of your mentor.
    • Your mentor will meet up with you on a unit night and give you your welcome pack.
  4. You'll meet up with your mentor and learn how to use eDofE and discuss what your options are for each part of the award.
Your awarding body
Young people will be registered to one of two awarding bodies. The outcomes of the award are the same, however, the way the award is delivered will be different. Below are the two awarding bodies:
  • Sunderland City Council
    • For explorers part of the Young Leader, 3rd Washington and 1st Washington units
  • Durham Scout County
    • For explorers part of 1st Fatfield, 1st Herrington, 1st Eppleton and 1st Houghton units

Support available to young people
HLS district has a number of adult volunteers who have committed to helping young people successfully complete the award.

District DofE Team...
...centrally coordinate the award, including the administration of it. The DofE team are responsible for:
  • enrolling young people into the award (including contacting unit leaders)
  • organising shared expeditions to ensure all young people can take part in a DofE expedition in a timely manner
  • ensuring all aspects of the award are being delivered by mentors
  • delivering a quality and consistent approach to the award
  • presenting your award

DofE Mentors...
...help you complete the sections of your award. They're your points of contact to ask questions about evidence. They are responsible for:
  • recording your evidence and ensuring your evidence is good quality
  • ensuring you understand where you are in the award
  • ensuring you understand what you need to do next to gain your award
  • delivering your award
  • organising expeditions (where possible)
